In the mid-nineteenth century, Syosset was known as East Woods, though some people dubbed it Buckwheat, after a local crop. East Woods was in the path when the Long Island Rail Road extended its main line between Hicksville and Cold Spring Harbor in 1854. Syosset was a rural town prior to the coming of the railroad.
